സാന്താ സിംഗ്-ബാന്താ സിംഗ് സിക്കു ജോക്കുകള്‍ ഞാന്‍ നന്നായി ആസ്വദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്‍ അപ്പോളൊന്നും സിക്കുകാരെല്ലാം പൊട്ടന്മാരാണെന്നു വിചാരിച്ചിട്ടേയില്ല. (എന്തിന്, പത്മശ്രീ കിട്ടിയവരില്‍ പോലും മലയാളികളേക്കാള്‍ മുന്നില്‍ സിക്കുകാരാണല്ലോ.)

കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം കൂടെ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന സിംഗന്‍ എന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചു: “What do you think about taking extended warranty for my new laptop?”

അമേരിക്കയിലെ അമിത പണിക്കൂലി കാരണം, മിക്കവരും വിലകൂടിയ സാധനങ്ങള്‍ വാങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ സാധാരണയായി നിര്‍മ്മാതാക്കള്‍ നല്‍കുന്ന ഒരു വര്‍ഷം വാറണ്ടിയ്ക്കു പുറമേ വിലയുടെ 10 മുതല്‍ 20 ശതമാനം അധികം കൊടുത്ത് രണ്ടോ മൂന്നോ വര്‍ഷത്തേയ്ക്കു കൂടി എക്സ്റ്റന്‍ഡഡ് വാറണ്ടി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന അധിക വാറണ്ടി എടുക്കാറുണ്ട്.

ഞാന്‍ സാധാരണ ഒരു സംഗതിയ്ക്കും എക്സ്റ്റന്‍ഡഡ് വാറണ്ടി എടുക്കാറില്ല. അതു കൊണ്ട് സിംഗനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: “I don't usually take extended warranty. Taking extended warranty for all your purchases will be equivalent to taking extended warranty for none. The repair cost of one item will almost be equal to the cost of extended warranty for all items. I am banking on the belief that only one of my items will go wrong in any normal five year period.”

എന്‍റെ തിയറി സിംഗനു പിടിച്ചു. സിംഗന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു: “That's true. Moreover, the extended warranty did not help me last time when my laptop got damaged. They did not honor the extended warranty.”

അപ്പോള്‍ എനിക്ക് കൂടുതലറിയാന്‍ ഉത്സാഹമായി. ഞാന്‍ ആരാഞ്ഞു: “What happened?”

“They told me that the warranty does not apply if I drop the laptop and damage it!“

“That makes sense. They can't possibly give you a new laptop every time you have run-in with your boss and decide to drop your laptop.”

“No, I did not drop the laptop!”

ഞാന്‍ വീണ്ടും കണ്‍ഫ്യൂഷനിലായി: “Then? If you did not damage the laptop by dropping it, they should honor the warranty.”

“I did not drop the laptop. The laptop fell down accidentally from my hand!”
